Basic Eligibility requirements:

I am a United States Citizen.
I am at least 21 years old.
I have eye sight correctable to 20/50.
I possess a valid Indiana driver's license or will be able to obtain one at time of appointment.
I have never been convicted of a felony, or a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.
I have no involvement with illegal drugs and can pass a drug screen.
I have a high school diploma or GED.
I meet Federal and State eligibility requirements to possess firearms. Note: Anyone convicted of any felony, crime of violence, illegal sale of any drug, misdemeanor of domestic violence, etc. are not eligible to possess firearms.

Positions available:

Merit Patrolman - full time paid position with retirement, death, and health care benefits. Patrolman work a 12 hour (6a-6p or 6p-6a) work schedule on a two week rotation: 2 on/2 off/3 on/2 off/2 on/3 off.
In addition to the requirements above, merit officers must:
- Be able to meet the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy basic physical exit standards during the agility test phase of the selection process.
- Live in Wayne County within 90 days of appointment.
- Have one of the following:
  - Have completed at least 60 semester or 90 quarter hours of credit from an accredited college or university and have a minimum grade point average of 2.0 on a 4.0 grading scale, evidenced by a certified transcript
  - Have at least three years previous full-time paid, successful Corrections/Jail experience in which the essential job functions were performed at a satisfactory or above level, as witnessed by the employer or documented by employee evaluations
  - Have at least three years previous full-time paid, successful (sworn) law enforcement experience having graduated from a state accredited police academy (entry level law enforcement basic training curriculum) in which the essential job functions were performed at a satisfactory or above level, as witnessed by the employer or documented by employee evaluations
  - Have at least two years of successful, active, military duty with an honorable discharge or currently serving at the rank of E-4 (or its equivalent), or above, in a US military service.
Corrections Officer - full time paid position with retirement, death, and health care benefits. Jail employees start as corrections officers and can be promoted to sworn Jail Deputies as positions become available. Jail staff work a 12 hour (6a-6p or 6p-6a) work schedule on a two week rotation: : 2 on/2 off/3 on/2 off/2 on/3 off.
Uniformed Volunteer Services Unit (UVSU) Deputy - Sworn volunteer deputy with workman's compensation benefits for injuries sustained while working or training.
- Be able to meet the Wayne County Sheriff's Uniformed Volunteer Services Unit Fitness standards during the agility test phase of the selection process.
- UVSU Deputies must live in Wayne County within 90 days of appointment.
- UVSU Deputies are required to have a minimum of 24 hours a year training (including regular firearms qualifications).
- No Wayne County Sheriff's Office employee can work for a business who's primary business is to sell or serve alcohol.
- There are 3 classes of UVSU Officers:
  - 3rd Class Deputies - have completed basic training and are required to work at least 30 hours every 6 months.
  - 2nd Class Deputies - have completed intermediate training and are required to work at least 60 hours every 6 months
  - 1st Class Deputies - have completed the merit FTO program and are required to work 120 hours every 6 months.
When available uniforms can be provided by the department for UVSU Deputies, but if the department does not have uniform equipment available, UVSU Deputies need to be prepared to spend up to $1,500 for a weapon (40 cal Gen 4 Glock 22 only) and uniform.
On occasion UVSU Deputies may be asked to take time off from their regular job in order to attend training or perform work details.

To determine the selectee's employment suitability, the Sheriff's Office will conduct an evaluation of personal suitability. Convictions, dismissals from employment or dishonorable separations from military service do not automatically disqualify you for employment. To determine employment suitability, the circumstances of each individual case will be evaluated in relationship to the requirements of the position for which you have applied.

Any misstatements or omissions of material facts, as part of your application, are cause for forfeiture of all rights to any employment in the service of the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
